Find your passion. And then share it.

I participated in my first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) tournament today. Unfortunately I lost both of my matches. I’ve never had that much fun losing before.

About five months ago, Micah and I started taking Jiu Jitsu classes. Originally I thought I would do it for a month or two just to help Micah transition but quickly I became addicted. It’s hard to explain to anyone who hasn’t grappled before – the workout is like nothing I’ve ever done. The camaraderie is great too. But the thing I’ve been most struck by is love my instructor (and the other instructors I’ve met) have for the sport. They’ve found their gospel and they just want to share it. I have a deep respect for people who just want to share their passion. They’re fun to be around. They’re inspiring. They’re contagious.

BJJ is much like teaching students who come from challenging backgrounds. It’s hard work, it’s sometimes painful, and it’s exhilarating. For me, it is deeply gratifying helping students find and develop the best in themselves. My hope is my passion for education provides a source of energy and inspiration for my students and my colleagues … even when we lose a couple of matches.
