Our first project of the year was designed to help students identify their talents, passions and interests, and to help them learn about the people and events that have made them who they are. Setting goals for themselves is a critical process that all individuals must learn to do. The more they understand about themselves, the easier it is to create long-term goals. While engaging in this work, we read Sherman Alexie’s semi-autobiographical novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian.
This project was made up six (6) components: a Past Map and Future Map presented as a Photo Essay; a detailed Goals Statement; a first draft of a college essay for the common application; a reflection on the Alexie book, and a final presentation. The project lasted two weeks, ending in September, 2011.
